The Secret Garden of Backyard Bliss
As a landscape architect, I’ve had the privilege of designing outdoor spaces that bring families and their furry companions together in pure harmony. It’s a delicate balance, crafting landscapes that cater to both human and canine needs, but when done right, the result is nothing short of magical.
Let me share with you the story of one of my most cherished projects, where I had the opportunity to live out the whimsical tale of “The Secret Garden.” This historical estate, designed by legendary women landscape architects, had fallen into disrepair over the years. But with a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for nature’s restorative powers, I set out to breathe new life into this forgotten oasis.
As Janice Parker, an award-winning landscape architect, once said, “If I can make inviting garden rooms that are beautifully furnished, Mother Nature will do the rest of the work.” And that’s precisely what I aimed to do, crafting distinct garden spaces that would not only captivate the senses but also cater to the needs of both families and their four-legged companions.
Designing for Furry Family Members
One of the first and most crucial considerations in my approach was addressing the unique needs of our canine friends. After all, they’re an integral part of the family, and their comfort and well-being should be at the forefront of any landscape design.
As Janice Parker wisely advised, “It is important to know the route the pets take in the garden and the plants they regularly use as their port-a-potty. The plants they rub up against will have wear and tear, and we design accordingly.”
With this in mind, I incorporated a designated dog run near the main entrance, complete with a gravel surface and tough, resilient plants like impatiens that could withstand the occasional paw prints and tail-wagging. This area provided a secure and comfortable space for our canine companions to stretch their legs and enjoy the great outdoors, without compromising the delicate balance of the rest of the landscape.
But the pet-friendly features didn’t stop there. I also designed an outdoor pet-washing station, complete with a hose and plenty of towels, making it easy for families to clean up their furry friends after a day of adventuring in the garden. As Janice Parker noted, “A great and simple hose reel is essential, and having it be there hung on the side of the house or sitting on the ground, there is often a need to create a storage area around it that hides the entire apparatus.”
Creating Multifunctional Spaces
While catering to the needs of our four-legged friends was a top priority, I also recognized the importance of designing spaces that would delight and engage the entire family, both young and old.
One of the most unique and whimsical features I incorporated was a trampoline, nestled within a lush, verdant oasis. As Janice Parker recounted, “Years ago, I was working on a wraparound terrace on Fifth Avenue for a well-known whimsical fashion designer. She requested color all year and an area for a trampoline. The trampoline was not for her — it was for her boyfriend who insisted it was safe with no netting or railings on the edge.”
While the decision to include a trampoline in an elevated outdoor space certainly raised some eyebrows, I was determined to make it work. I planted high hedges on the perimeter of the terrace, weaving in red and purple silk rose vines to create a stunning, year-round display of color. This not only satisfied the client’s desire for a vibrant, ever-changing landscape but also provided a safe, enclosed space for the trampoline.
In addition to the trampoline, I incorporated a variety of other family-friendly features, such as a cozy seating area with comfortable outdoor furniture, a fire pit for chilly evenings, and a lush, verdant lawn perfect for impromptu games of fetch or picnics.
Blending the Indoors and Outdoors
Another key element in my design approach was the seamless integration of the indoor and outdoor living spaces. After all, the garden should be an extension of the home, a natural continuation of the family’s everyday life.
To achieve this, I carefully considered the placement of doors, windows, and pathways, ensuring a smooth and intuitive flow between the interior and exterior spaces. As evidenced by the stunning images, the result was a harmonious fusion of indoor and outdoor living, where the boundaries between the two blurred, creating a sense of endless possibilities for family gatherings, alfresco dining, and quality time spent in nature.
But it wasn’t just the physical connection that I focused on; it was also the visual and emotional one. By carefully curating the plant palette and incorporating design elements that echoed the aesthetic of the home, I was able to create a seamless transition that made the garden feel like a natural extension of the living space, rather than a separate entity.
